About the maker

Bellamy Jean is a contemporary textile artist and designer specializing in original and bespoke embroidery.

Bellamy’s journey began in the back of her mother’s lingerie shop in Melbourne, Australia. Today, her studio resonates with the steady pulse of an industrial Juki embroidery machine. Eschewing digital programming, Bellamy practices the art of freehand machine embroidery, using the needle as a literal drawing tool. Every line and curve is guided by hand directly onto the fabric, ensuring that no two pieces are ever identical.

Deeply research driven, Bellamy’s practice explores the art of alchemy and the profound symbolism found in world religions. Her visual language is a modern interpretation of ancient icons, brought to life through contemporary abstraction.

She is heavily influenced by the Symbolist movement, prioritizing the expression of dreams and emotions over literal representation. Her work also draws from the pioneering color palettes of Hilma af Klint, the structural precision of Josef Albers, and the kinetic balance of Alexander Calder. By blending these modernist influences with heritage techniques like traditional quilting and appliqué, Bellamy creates textiles that feel both ancient and entirely new.
