The Flowers for my Grief or The Flower Series explores the visual dimension of the various processes and stages of mourning through the representation of flowers.”

— Maria Luz

Maria Luz turns what usually goes unnoticed — an empty chair, a blue rubbish bag, a football net, a flower in a state of loss — into images of almost emotional precision. Her practice often begins with analogue photography, but painting does not act as a simple translation of the image; it becomes a way of slowing down looking, of holding onto light, colour, and the strange silence of ordinary things. In works such as Flower Series, the flower stops being a decorative subject and becomes a body in transition, connected to grief, memory, and the attempt to preserve something before it disappears. We love it because there is a rare intelligence in the way Maria looks at the banal without over-romanticising it: her paintings do not try to dramatise everyday life, they simply reveal that certain objects, when observed closely enough, already carry solitude, humour, beauty, and time.
